Homework Policy

Third Grade Homework Policy

Dear Parents,

Our third grade classrooms have a unified homework policy this year.  Homework is limited to independent practice of previously taught concepts.  Research shows that homework gives students the time they need for their brains to process new information and teaches your child responsibility.  The homework that we assign should not take your child over 30 minutes daily.

Classroom assignments are expected to be returned the next day unless there is an unusual circumstance.  If this is the case a note should be sent to the teacher indicating the reason for the late home work.  Late homework is expected to be returned in a timely fashion. Students who fail to complete and return homework may be required to sit in lunch detention or miss recess.

This year your child’s homework will consist of weekly reading assignments, math practice, spelling sorts, study guides, and any unfinished work your child may need to complete.

Reading Homework-Each week students will be given a reading assignment that correlates with the reading skill that we are focusing on for the week. This assignment will be sent home on Monday and is expected to be returned on Friday. You may send them back completed anytime during the week if you wish.

Spelling-Students will be given a monthly word wall test on 3rd grade focus words. You will receive a list of these words at the beginning of each month so that you can practice with your child the entire month. Students will also have spelling patterns that they will need to practice. These will be sent home on a weekly basis. Please check Edline and our weekly newsletter to stay up to date on when these will be coming home.

Math-Math assignments will be given every Tuesday and Thursday and correlate with the concepts the students are learning.

Study Guides-Study guides are given to your child to help them prepare for upcoming tests. Study guides ARE considered homework and they must be returned signed indicating that your child did study for their test.  Please check Edline or the weekly newsletter so that you are aware of upcoming tests.

Classroom Work- Students may bring home unfinished classroom work if necessary. Many times we try not to send home unfinished work, but sometimes with the time constraints there is no other way to get it finished.

Please sign and return the attached homework policy indicating that you have read and explained the homework policy to your child. If you have any questions regarding this policy please discuss them with your child’s teacher.

Sincerely,
The Third Grade Teachers
